Best Peaberry Coffee by Origin for Roasteries

Best Peaberry Coffee by Origin for Roasteries

Written by the Genuine Blue Mountain Coffee team. We’re a JACRA-licensed importer of Jamaica Blue Mountain green coffee, every barrel we sell ships with its JACRA certificate, and our representatives in Jamaica work with the farmers.

Most “best peaberry coffee” lists are written by the people selling it, and they name the same three brands and two origins. This one puts blind cupping scores, green prices, and where to buy it next to each origin, including ours.

We import Jamaica Blue Mountain Peaberry, so we have a stake in this list. We also read the same blind cuppings everyone else does, and they don’t put JBM at the top. Kenya holds that spot.

Pick an origin by its reputation and you can pay Kona prices for a cup your customers can’t tell from a Tanzania at a fifth of the green cost. Pick by score alone and you can miss the one that sells.

Here’s how seven peaberry origins compare on the cup, the blind scores, the green price, and where a roastery can buy each one.

TL;DR (Best Peaberry Coffee by Origin)

No single peaberry is the best: Kenya leads on blind scores, Tanzania on familiarity and price, Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain on scarcity and story, Brazil on value, and Costa Rica peaberry is hard to find green at all.

  • Kenya: among the highest-scoring peaberries in recent Coffee Review tastings, including a 96-point lot in 2025, at about $9.50 a green pound.
  • Tanzania: the peaberry most US drinkers know, scoring 92 to 95, at $6 to $9 a green pound in boxes and bags.
  • Kona: 94 to 96 in blind cuppings, and $45 to $55 a green pound because of Hawaiian land and labor.
  • Jamaica Blue Mountain: ours, at $38.64 a green pound in a 33lb barrel with a JACRA certificate. No neutral score for the roasted peaberry since a 1998 green cupping.
  • Brazil, Papua New Guinea, and Costa Rica: Brazil scores 92 for the least money, PNG sits in the low 90s at Tanzania prices, and Costa Rica peaberry reaches the US roasted, rarely green.

Best Peaberry Coffee by Origin: Which Peaberry Coffee Has the Best Tasting?

Which peaberry coffee has the best tasting? On blind scores, Kenya. Coffee Review’s peaberry archive puts Kenya peaberries at the top of its 2025 and 2026 reviews, with a 96 for Speedwell Coffee’s Kenya Gondo Peaberry and four more at 95.

A score measures a lot, not an origin, so the best peaberry coffee beans on paper aren’t always the best on your menu. Here’s each origin with its typical cup, its best independent score, what the green costs, and who sells it.

Origin Typical cup, from blind reviews Best score found Green price per lb (unit) Where to buy it green
Kenya Black currant, citrus, sweet-savory; often a lighter body 96 (2025) $9.45 to $9.85 (1lb); wholesale tiers Sweet Maria’s and Coffee Shrub; Burman
Tanzania Bright, sweet, chocolate-toned fruit; light to medium body 95 (2019) $6.13 (65lb box) to $9.25 (1lb) Genuine Origin; Coffee Bean Corral; Burman; Coffee Shrub
Kona Black cherry, chocolate, nut, florals; syrupy body 96 (2026) $45 to $55 (1lb); $51.80 (5lb) Big Island Coffee Roasters; Rooster Farms; Kona Premium
Jamaica Blue Mountain Chocolate, orange peel, florals; light, silky body 80 for a green peaberry (1998); 92 for a flat-bean JBM (2021) $38.64 (33lb barrel) Genuine Blue Mountain Coffee (ours); JA Coffee (70kg barrels)
Brazil Cashew, cane sugar, orange zest; gentle acidity 92 (2024) About $7.52 to $7.78 (5lb to 25lb; recheck) Coffee Bean Corral
Papua New Guinea Dark chocolate, fruit, spice; full body 93 (2013) $5.95 to $9.49 (1lb to 60lb tiers) Burman
Costa Rica Raisin, walnut, cocoa; round acidity 90 (2011) Rarely sold green; $24.99 per 16oz roasted Burman (out of stock); Volcanica, roasted

Scores are Coffee Review blind cuppings of roasted coffee, with the review year. Prices were checked on September 30, 2026, and ours on September 28, 2026.

IF a “best peaberry” list doesn’t name a score, a price, or a farm, it’s a sales page.

Tanzania Peaberry: What Does Tanzanian Peaberry Coffee Taste Like?

Tanzanian peaberry coffee tastes bright and sweet, with chocolate-toned fruit and a light to medium body, like a Kenya with the volume turned down. Coffee Review’s Tanzania reference page describes the traditional cup as close to the best Kenyas, though less intense and arguably better balanced.

The best Tanzanian peaberry coffee on Coffee Review’s record, a conventional lot, scored 95 in 2019: Flight Coffee’s Ngorongoro Ridge. And the most recent, JBC Coffee Roasters’ lot in June 2024, scored 93. Two 95s in 2021 were Geshas, so credit the variety, not the bean shape.

Why Tanzania means peaberry in the US is habit, not botany. Coffee Review traces the pairing to at least 1975 and calls “Tanzania peaberry” a specialty-trade brand; no statistics show Tanzania grows more peaberries than anywhere else. At Tanzania’s own auction, peaberry sells level with AA.

  • Good fit if you want a first peaberry your customers already recognize, at a green price close to your other Africans. Tanzanian peaberry green coffee beans run $6.13 a pound by the box at Genuine Origin and $8.35 to $9.25 at Coffee Bean Corral.
  • Watch for the label doing the work. Not every Tanzania peaberry is a good lot, so cup the sample before you buy a box.
  • IF you’re choosing between two Tanzania peaberries, pick by the importer’s cupping score and arrival date, not the region on the label.

Kenya Peaberry (PB): Which Kenya Peaberry Scores Highest?

The highest-scoring Kenya peaberry on record is Speedwell Coffee’s Kenya Gondo Peaberry, at 96 on Coffee Review in May 2025. It came from 727 smallholders at the Gondo washing station in Murang’a and sold for $19 per 12oz.

Kenya PB tastes like Kenya AA: black currant, citrus, and a sweet-savory edge, often with a lighter body. Four more Kenya peaberries scored 95 between May and September 2026, and a Kenya AA took a 96 in the same window, so the two grades sit within a point.

Green Kenya PB is the best-documented buy here. Sweet Maria’s listed five 2026-arrival peaberries at $9.45 to $9.85 a pound, scoring up to 93 on its own table, and Coffee Shrub sells the same lots in wholesale tiers. At Nairobi’s auction, PB sells about 4% to 5% below AA.

  • Good fit if you sell single origins on score and want the strongest peaberry evidence for the price.
  • Watch for lot-to-lot swings. One washing station’s peaberry scored 92.2 one year and 88.9 the next on the same importer’s table.
  • IF you buy Kenya PB by score, check the arrival date. Last crop’s 93 isn’t the new lot.

Kona Peaberry: Is Kona Peaberry Coffee Good?

Is Kona peaberry coffee good? Yes, by any blind measure. The best peaberry Kona coffee on Coffee Review is Paradise Roasters’ Kona SL34 Peaberry, at 96 in March 2026, and Big Island Coffee Roasters and Kona Earth both scored 94: black cherry, chocolate, nut, and florals over a syrupy body.

The question is the price. Green Kona peaberry runs $45 a pound at Rooster Farms and $55 at Big Island Coffee Roasters, against a statewide farm price of $24 a pound for any Hawaii green coffee in 2025-26. High Hawaiian land and labor costs, combined with hand-picking and limited production, help explain the price.

Hawaii grades peaberry as its own type, Type II, not as a grade above Extra Fancy. The best-scoring Kona farm, Hula Daddy, doesn’t sell green to anyone, so the 98-point Kona in the FAQ isn’t a coffee you can buy to roast.

  • Good fit if you can price it as a limited release. Roasted Kona peaberry retails from about $72 to $145 a pound. Our Kona vs Jamaican Blue Mountain post compares the two premium origins.
  • Watch for peaberry sold as a higher grade. In Hawaii’s rules it’s a type, not a step above Extra Fancy.
  • IF you can’t sell roasted Kona peaberry well above $60 a pound, the green math doesn’t work: $51.80 green is about $61 per roasted pound at a 15% loss.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Peaberry: What Makes It Different?

Jamaica Blue Mountain Peaberry is ours, so read this entry with that in mind. What makes Jamaica Blue Mountain Peaberry unusual isn’t evidence that peaberry tastes inherently better; it’s the combination of the peaberry separation, the protected Jamaica Blue Mountain origin, and Jamaica’s tightly controlled export system.

JACRA inspects and certifies every export lot, it ships in wooden barrels, and every barrel we sell has its JACRA certificate. Here’s how Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is made.

The cup is soft and sweet: chocolate, orange peel, and florals over a light, silky body. Coffee Review’s roasted JBM scores run 87 to 92, and the only JBM peaberry it has cupped was a 1998 green sample, scored 80 beside the same estate’s flat beans.

We sell JBM Peaberry in 33lb barrels at $1,275, or $38.64 a green pound with US shipping included, and Grade 1 from the same farms at $1,190. Our peaberry costs 7% more than our Grade 1; some licensed sellers price theirs the same or lower.

  • Good fit if you want a barrel with a certificate behind the name and a gift-line price.
  • Watch for the price. At $38.64 a green pound it costs four times a Kenya PB, and there’s no recent neutral score for the roasted peaberry.
  • IF you’re comparing our Peaberry with our Grade 1, the gap is $2.58 a green pound, so price the peaberry at least $3.03 more per roasted pound.

Brazil Peaberry (Moca): Which Is the Best Value?

Brazil peaberry, called moca at home, is the best value on this list. True Coffee Roasters’ natural Brazil peaberry scored 92 on Coffee Review in August 2024 at $14.99 per 12oz, with cashew butter, orange zest, and a syrupy, gentle cup.

Brazil’s classification rules split flat and peaberry beans, and flat lots may carry up to 10% peaberries, so the peaberry gets screened out. Green Daterra “Pearl” Bourbon peaberry listed at $7.52 to $7.78 a pound at Coffee Bean Corral, against $5.00 for a commodity Cerrado flat at Royal Coffee.

  • Good fit if you want a peaberry for espresso or a house single origin at a house price.
  • Watch for “more flavor” claims on the bag. Both 92-point Brazil peaberries taste like classic natural Brazils, not brighter ones.
  • IF you roast for espresso, try a Brazil peaberry before a Kenya. The sweetness and gentle acidity suit it.

Papua New Guinea Peaberry: The One the Lists Leave Out

Papua New Guinea peaberry scored 93 on Coffee Review in 2013 (Lexington Coffee’s Kimel Estate lot) and landed on its 2017 top-30 list, with dark chocolate, fruit, and spice over a full body. It’s a washed Typica, like Jamaica Blue Mountain, at a fraction of the price.

Burman Coffee Traders is the steadiest US green source, with five estate peaberries in 2026 at $5.95 to $9.49 a pound, including Sigri and Bunum Wo from Carpenter Estates.

  • Good fit if you want low-90s scores at Tanzania prices and an origin your competitors skip.
  • Watch for stock. PNG availability can be seasonal, so check the importer’s current crop and arrival date before planning a release.

Costa Rica Peaberry: Where Does the Premium Come From?

Costa Rica peaberry’s premium comes from scarcity in the US market, not from scores. Coffee Review hasn’t reviewed one since 2012; the two it cupped, both from La Candelilla Estate in Tarrazú, scored 90 in 2011 and 89 in 2012, with raisin, walnut, cocoa, and a round, muted acidity.

Green is the problem. The only US importer listing found, Burman’s Aquiares Estate peaberry at $5.90 to $7.25 a pound, was out of stock and dated 2022. Costa Rica peaberry reaches the US roasted: Volcanica sells it at $24.99 per 16oz, 25% over its flat Tarrazú.

  • Good fit if you already buy a Tarrazú and your importer can pull a peaberry separation from it.
  • Watch for stale listings. Confirm a lot is in stock and current crop before you plan a release around it.
  • IF a Costa Rica peaberry shows up on an offer list, buy the sample. It doesn’t come around often.

Best Peaberry Coffee for Roasteries: Which Origin Should You Stock?

The best peaberry coffee for a roastery to stock is Tanzania or Kenya for an everyday single origin, Brazil for espresso and value, and Kona or Jamaica Blue Mountain for limited releases and gifts, where the green price only works at a limited-release margin.

Use Origin Why
Everyday single origin Tanzania or Kenya $6 to $10 a green pound, familiar to US drinkers, and scores in the 90s
Score-led releases Kenya The highest blind scores of any peaberry since 2025
Espresso or a blend component Brazil Sweet, nutty, low acidity, and the cheapest green
Something your competitors skip Papua New Guinea Low-90s scores at Tanzania prices
Limited release or reserve Kona A domestic origin story, priced at a limited-release margin
Gift line and holiday boxes Jamaica Blue Mountain A barrel, a certificate, and a name gift buyers know
Tasting flight Tanzania beside Kenya, or JBM Peaberry beside JBM Grade 1 Same-region or same-farm pairs show what shape does and doesn’t change

Whichever you pick, run the break-even: charge at least the extra green cost per roasted pound over the flat grade, or sell the peaberry where the story carries the price. A standout peaberry can also become the coffee your regulars come back for.

  • IF you want the safest first peaberry on the menu, start with Tanzania or Kenya, where the green costs the least and the cup is the most familiar to US drinkers.
  • IF a Kona or Jamaica Blue Mountain peaberry is on your list, price it as a limited release, not an everyday single origin.
  • IF a customer asks for “the best peaberry,” ask what they liked last. Kenya and Tanzania taste nothing like Kona or Jamaica Blue Mountain.

Where to Buy Peaberry Green Coffee Beans for Your Roastery?

You can buy peaberry green coffee beans from the importers and farms below, checked on September 30, 2026. Genuine Blue Mountain Coffee sells Jamaica Blue Mountain Peaberry in 33lb barrels with a JACRA certificate and US shipping included.

  • Tanzania: Genuine Origin (65lb boxes, $6.13 a pound); Coffee Bean Corral (half-pound samples to 90lb, $8.35 to $9.25 a pound); Burman Coffee Traders and Coffee Shrub (current lots; check prices).
  • Kenya: Sweet Maria’s for 1lb bags ($9.45 to $9.85 a pound) and Coffee Shrub for wholesale tiers of the same lots; Burman carries Kenya PBs between stock-outs.
  • Kona: Big Island Coffee Roasters ($55 a pound; $259 for 5lb); Rooster Farms ($45 a pound; $225 for 5lb); Kona Premium (8oz to 10lb; ask for the peaberry price).
  • Jamaica Blue Mountain: Genuine Blue Mountain Coffee ($1,275 per 33lb barrel); JA Coffee in Montreal sells 70kg barrels.
  • Brazil: Coffee Bean Corral’s Daterra Pearl Bourbon peaberry (5lb to 25lb tiers; recheck stock).
  • Papua New Guinea: Burman Coffee Traders (five estate peaberries in 2026, $5.95 to $9.49 a pound).
  • Costa Rica: rarely green in the US. Ask your Costa Rica importer for a peaberry separation.

Sample first. Most of these sellers offer green peaberry coffee beans in 1lb or half-pound units, and ours is a 100g Grade 1 sample to set your JBM baseline.

IF you’re buying green from a new importer, ask for the flat grade from the same lot to cup beside the peaberry.

FAQs

Why Is Kona Peaberry So Expensive?

Because all Kona coffee is expensive. The USDA put Hawaii’s farm price for green coffee at $24 a pound in 2025-26, hand-picking at Hawaiian wages sets much of that, and production fell 20% that year. Peaberry adds sorting and scarcity, at 3% to 7% of a crop by growers’ estimates.

What Is the Highest Rated Kona Coffee?

Hula Daddy’s Laura’s Reserve SL34, scored 98 by Coffee Review in August 2026. It’s a washed SL34, not a peaberry, and the farm doesn’t sell green coffee. The highest-rated Kona peaberry is Paradise Roasters’ Kona SL34 Peaberry, at 96 in March 2026.

Which Peaberry Coffee Is the Cheapest to Buy Green?

Tanzania, by the box: Genuine Origin listed a Tanzania Peaberry Plus at $6.13 a pound in a 65lb box on September 30, 2026, and Burman’s Papua New Guinea peaberries started at $5.95 a pound. Kenya PB runs about $9.50, Jamaica Blue Mountain $38.64, and Kona $45 to $55.

How Do You Sample a Peaberry Before Buying a Full Lot?

Buy the smallest unit, roast it beside the flat grade from the same origin, and cup both blind. Coffee Bean Corral sells half-pound Tanzania samples, Sweet Maria’s sells 1lb Kenya peaberries, and Genuine Blue Mountain Coffee sells a 100g Grade 1 sample to set your Jamaica Blue Mountain baseline.
